Wegmans Coming To Midlothian
Wegmans is coming to the Richmond market with two stores.
Two developers announced today that Wegmans Food Markets Inc. will have stores anchoring developments – one in Short Pump in western Henrico County and one in Midlothian in Chesterfield County.
West Broad Marketplace development in Henrico will have a Wegmans as a co-anchor. Stonehenge Village in Midlothian will also have one of the grocery chain’s stores.
“Over the years, we have had so many requests to open a Wegmans store in the Richmond area, so we are delighted to finally announce that we’re headed there,” said Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans senior vice president of real estate in a statement.
The Midlothian Wegmans will less than a mile west of Chesterfield Towne Center, on the eastern edge of the Village of Midlothian in the 12500 block of Midlothian Turnpike.
The Short Pump store will be on West Broad Street near North Gayton Road, about a half-mile west of the Short Pump Mall.
Wegmans said each store is expected to employ 550 to 600 people in full- and part-time positions.
According to the grocery chain’s officials, a construction timeline and projected opening date for each store won’t be determined until all necessary approvals are in place. The two sites are approximately 11 miles apart.
The stores will be similar in size and design to Wegmans’ current Virginia stores, which range in size from 120,000 to 140,000 square feet – which will make them among the largest grocery stores in the Richmond market.
Wegmans currently operates five stores in Northern Virginia and one in Fredericksburg, with work under way for an Albemarle County location.
The family-owned supermarket chain, founded in 1916 and with headquarters in Gates, N.Y., near Rochester, has 83 stores in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts. The company has been on FORTUNE magazine’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ list for seventeen consecutive years. In 2014 the company ranked 12th on Fortune’s list.
